queen Two birthdays

Britain’s longest reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II is set to celebrate her official 90th birthday today. Her actual birthday was on 21 April. It’s a tradition linked to the unreliable British weather, because the Royal Family want to hold the grand royal birthday parade in the summer.

Rich List

She may be the most influential woman in the world, but she’s dropped off the rich list again, though I’m sure no expense has been spared for the birthday celebrations

2014: A Graphic Review

A selection of editorial cartoons depicting events from the last 12 months; graphic expressions, both textual and pictorial of an eventful year. They were predominately produced for the New Zealand print media.

The editorial cartoon is intended to make you think, not necessarily laugh. It is not a comic strip. They are usually placed on the publication’s editorial page where ‘opinion’ dominates. The editorial cartoonist has a number of devices at his disposal – caricature, irony, ridicule, satire, stereotypes, symbols, analogies, among a raft of conventional and unconventional codes.

Humour is only one of the tools available. As pictorial chroniclers of history, we encompass the full spectrum of current issues, both controversial and comical, serious and otherwise. An effective editorial cartoon combines a number of layers of meaning – both intended and those open to the reader’s interpretation.

Drawing: Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt

Sprint sensation Usain St Leo Bolt is considered to be the fastest person ever. The Jamaican sporting phenomenon nicknamed ‘Lightning Bolt’ for obvious reasons, including his famed victory stance, is undoubtably track and field’s most electrifying star.

The first man to hold both the 100 and 200 metre world records since fully automatic time measurements became mandatory in 1977. Both were secured in Berlin, in August 2009, running the 100 in 9.58 seconds and the 200 in 19.19 seconds.

Add to that the “double triple” at the Olympics, winning gold in the 100, 200 and 4×100 relay at both Beijing (2008) and London (2012).

Known for his relaxed approach, Usain famously fed on chicken nuggets before winning the 100 at Beijing. He didn’t have breakfast and woke up at 11, watched some TV then had some chicken nuggets, slept for 2 more hours, then went back for more nuggets!

After winning the 100 metres in London he celebrated back in his room in the Olympic VIllage til 3am, with three members of the Swedish women’s handball team, before running the heats of the 200 later that day. Despite losing all five of their matches and finishing  bottom of their group, the handballers; Gabriella Kain, Isabelle Gullden and Jamina Roberts asked for “special accreditation” to meet their idol.

A week later he was a guest on the Jonathan Ross show at the ITV studios on London’s Southbank. Hunters, including moi, lined the railings opposite the back entrance to catch a glimpse or possibly a ‘graph. While waiting for his car to arrive, he signed for us through the gaps. As you could imagine, the crowd was a huge crush, and I was left with the impression of a railing on my face for a couple of hours afterwards. But worth it.

Oyster Festival 2

Nearby my hometown of Invercargill, New Zealand, there’s a small town named Bluff, right at the southern tip of the South Island.

Every year they celebrate their world class oysters with the Bluff Oyster & Food Festival. Every year (almost) the weather is wild and wet, and this year it was so stormy that the festival was forced to close early.

Inspired by Abstract Expressionism, and following in the footsteps of ‘Jack the Dripper’ I created this cartoon to mark the event. Unfortunately, it wasn’t published. But I had fun doing it. The published specimen is here:
