  1. I’m curious when you do these drawings…..do you work off of a program for the show, sit there watching the show and do them then, or some other way? You capture such intense details of the people, I can’t imagine how you come up with these if you’re not face-to-face with them one at a time.

    • I work from a variety of sources, mostly stills that are in the programmes and publicity material or images I take myself at events. While I don’t draw in the theatre itself, it is helpful to see the play to study the likenesses and expressions which can be missing in the static photos.Quite often people look very different on stage than they do in real life.

  2. Most interesting. I knew you couldn’t get so much personality just from photos. Had to be more there. Am glad I asked!

    • Also, using a softer lead like the 4B allows me a greater tonal range and a more ‘energetic’ line to give the drawing ‘personality’ rather than just a copy of the still. Some people prefer more detail and copy exactly what’s there,I do less but capture more.

      • Well, whatever it is you’re doing, it WORKS! Your art is absolutely amazing and I’m just saddened that you are not properly appreciated to the point where you can make your living doing what you were so obviously intended to do!
